Comments from a former keyboard student:
I took music classes from my toddler years until I graduated out of Musikgarten. There were times when I had to do tough writing assignments and when I had to figure out how to play a piece of music so I could play it at the next class. I stayed in it all those years and now I am first chair trombone in my middle school band. The main reason is that I could already read and play music.

Comments from Parents:
The Musikgarten class has provided an excellent opportunity for my daughter and I to enjoy relating with one another through music. While our special mother/daughter time is once a week during class, we continue to sing after class. We implement music at nap, while changing diapers, in the car and everyone in the family even huddles around her to sing the bedtime song! She claps to music, sways to the beat and loves to dance. I delight in seeing my daughter, who is just 16 months, being self expressed and empowered from her music experiences.

My daughter took several of your classes when she was in preschool. She now is in middle school singing in the chorus and playing clarinet in the band. Just wanted to say thank you for her early intro into the music world. Rosie loved your classes and says she is happiest when she is singing.

There are times throughout the day that I will be in the other room and can hear Allison, [age 5] humming a tune from class while playing by herself. With all the pop music kids are exposed to these days, I love that she has traditional folksongs and classic recordings floating around in her memory. Thank you!

The Cycle of Seasons - Fall
We were almost late for the music class.
I told Jocelyn to hurry because we were going to
Ms. Jan's class. Then she said "are we going
to have a party with Ms. Jan today?"
"Well, the music lesson is just like a party, isn't it?
We sing and dance in the class." I replied to her.
She then told me "Yes, and jingles and scarves, too."

My daughter was developmentally behind on both her speech and gross motor skills.
After physical and speech therapy, she began walking at 19 months. Then I searched for music classes to for more development. Most of the classes that I looked into were either cost-prohibitive or were offered at inconvenient times or locations. When I stumbled upon the Musik to Grow class at the Art Place, it seemed like the perfect solution.
Now, after only four months of the program, I honestly believe she owes just as much of her physical progress (and quite a bit of her speech development, too!) to her music classes as she does to her formal therapy. She loves marching, singing, playing instruments, and dancing, and incorporates all these activities into every day.
I think my favorite aspect of the toddler class is its willingness to meet a child where she is. Piper was fairly intimidated when we started last fall--everything was so new to her!--but nobody pressured her to participate until she was ready. In fact, I think I carried her in my arms for over a month's worth of classes! Gradually, though, she started participating and now I can always count on her to take part in all the activities.
During this time, we've been working with her therapist on jumping and walking up and down stairs unassisted. She's doing great on both now, and I credit her music classes with encouraging her to trust herself to use her body in new ways. I offer my most heartfelt thanks to Heather, Jan, Musik to Grow, and the Art Place!
